About Langton's Antiques Sheffield

The company was founded in 1870 by James Langton, from Manchester who came to Sheffield to make cloggs. Under one of James' four sons, John, Langtons went on to become the largest boot and shoe manufacturer in Yorkshire, with some sixteen shops in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Chesterfield. Then came the Sheffield blitz during World War Two which destroyed a number of shops and marked the beginning of a decline of the empire. When the current generation of Langtons, David and Jill, came into the business in the 1970s only six shops and the warehouse remained.

By the late 1990s it was increasingly hard for a small independent company to survive in the shoe business but with a warehouse and shop front in prime position the company made a strategic change in 1998 and Langton's Antiques opened its doors.
The shoe shop at the front of the Heeley warehouse has been converted into a cabinet room, with most of the original fittings intact along with the black and chrome deco shop front and Langton's sign. The old warehouse, a rabbit warren of alcoves, staircases and rooms, is now filled with all sorts of antiques and curios. The rear entrance, opening into a cobbled courtyard, is full of furniture and larger items and also houses our Courtyard Cafe, renowned for its excellent food and service.
